Where the employers are in Northeastern Pennsylvania

One thing that has baffled me in doing job searches is the fact that there is no simple, concise directory of employers in the Northeastern Pennsylvania area. It seemed like a very basic idea: you are looking for a job, these are the employers in this area who may or may not be hiring.  It wouldn't be perfect, but it would be better than, say, searching through a directory like the Harris Pennsylvania Industrial Directory, which lists employers in Pennsylvania by municipality (where two consecutively listed municipalities might be hundreds of miles apart), or simply wandering the streets trying to guess at what sort of work might be done in this building or that building.

Penn's Northeast provides something very close to this ideal guide with interactive business park maps for a sizable chunk of Northeastern Pennsylvania. These maps cover the the region where interstates 80, 81, 84, 380, and 476 (the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike) intersect.  From the main map you can get detailed maps for Luzerne, Lackawanna, Monroe, and Wayne counties indicating the locations of business parks. Clicking on one of the numbered circles indicating business parks will open a Java application which will give you access to demographic data, a PDF of the business park, and even information on available land and available buildings in each park.

So, for example, starting from the main map, you can zoom in to see all of the business parks located within Luzerne County. You can then click on an individual numbered circle for more information on that particular location. If you click on circle 41, a tighter zoom of the area will appear. Hovering over circle 41 causes more options to pop up:

Selecting "Download PDF Map" will open an Adobe PDF map of Hanover Industrial Estates, showing a layout of the park and a guide to the tenants in the park:

This level of detail provides job seekers with an excellent tool to aid in their job searches. Additional work will be required to determine what sort of work each employer does, and whether or not they are hiring. But the maps of business parks provided by Penn's Northeast help to provide valuable information on where the employers are in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
